Case Study, Beryl, aged 93, visits her local Chatter & Natter table in Newcastle.

Beryl, aged 93, moved into a care home in the Newcastle area six months ago. The transition was a significant change for her, and she felt incredibly apprehensive about leaving behind her previous home and the neighbours she had known for many years. Adjusting to a new environment was daunting, and with her increased reliance on a wheelchair, getting out and about became increasingly challenging.

Despite her initial worries, Beryl decided to try one of the care home’s weekly Chatter and Natter sessions. Although she felt nervous about attending, she found the experience invaluable. Held in a relaxed and friendly environment, the sessions quickly became something she looked forward to.

Beryl now attends once a week, which she finds is just the right balance for her as the activity can be tiring. She greatly appreciates that the care home offers the sessions every week, giving her the flexibility to join whenever she feels able.

What stands out most to Beryl is the warmth and friendliness of the volunteers. She values not only the conversations and company but also the convenience of being able to simply go downstairs and access the session within her own care home. For Beryl, these sessions have made a big difference in helping her feel connected, comfortable, and supported in her new home.
