A huge thank you to Sam for sharing this beautiful and deeply moving poem. Hollow Hours captures the quiet ache of loneliness with such honesty and tenderness, giving voice to the small everyday moments that can feel so heavy when you’re on your own. We’re incredibly grateful to Sam for allowing us to share it – it’s a powerful reminder of why connection matters, and why the work we do is so important…
Hollow Hours
I sit here having had a busy life
Cutting my sandwich, I hear the scrape of my knife
Across my plate, as it echoes through cupboards near
Something I never used to hear
As voices always filled the room
Now it’s the frail brushes of my old broom
Or the ripple in my tea
I never thought sounds of my house would make me feel so lonely
The only friend I now see is the face on the Tv
Or the cashier when I buy the milk for my tea
It’s funny how life goes so fast until your older years are due
you have all the time in the world but so much less to do
I hope we find each other, you are reading this poem alone
Even if it’s through paper, I’m still sitting here in your home.
